Make red, white and blue slime!

Learn about acids, bases and indicators and make a strange and fun gel.

Use the Polyvinyl Alcohol Slime Kit and the Phenol Red and Bromthymol Blue Indicator Set

Borax cross-links polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and forms slime.  Borax is also slightly basic or alkaline, changes the colors of the indicators.

Make Purple Slime

Use polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), 2 drops of phenol red indcator solution, 2 drops of bromthymol blue (BTB) solution, 1 drop of vinegar and borax solution.

Let the purple slime dry out in a cup for a few days.  It will become a hard plastic film and it will change colors.

Slime is about 95 % water.  As the water evaporates, the pH changes and that changes the color of the indicator.

Put the dried film back in a cup with a little water and the film will reaborb water and become like "slime" again.

Alginate Worm Connection Kit

Make terrific, colorific wormy gel and introduce chemical changes in elementary grades. Make a calcium chloride solution squirt in a little sodium alginate solution and pull up beautiful gels. Add lemon juice or baking soda to the alginate solution and the red cabbage juice indicator will change colors and you can make different colored "worms".
